Neuromorphic chemosensing

The objective of this project is three-fold: (1) to develop biologically-inspired algorithms for machine olfaction with chemical sensor arrays, (2) to establish correlations between sensor-array data and perceptual descriptions of odorants, and (3) to develop advanced interrogation methods for chemical sensors. Our algorithms are based on key computational primitives in the olfactory pathway, such as sensor convergence, lateral inhibition, and cortical feedback. We investigate correlations between sensory-analysis ratings, neural activity in the olfactory bulb, sensor-array patterns, and data from analytical instruments. Finally, we investigate excitation methods for chemical sensors that allow us to extract information from the sensors’ dynamic response; a number of hardware prototypes have been developed in support of this effort.
