Caricature perception

As part of this work, we study whether facial caricatures can be used as a mechanism to help improve face recognition by humans. For this purpose, we develop algorithms to generate caricatures by exaggerating the unique traits of each individual face (e.g., as compared to an “average” face, much in the way artists generate caricatures of celebrities.  Then, we conduct perceptual studies to determine whether this form of exaggeration helps memorize and recognize faces using an old-new face recognition paradigm.   As part of this work, we have also developed algorithms to reconstruct 3D facial models from 2D frontal photographs, and studied whether facial caricatures can be used to reduce other-race effects in human perception.
